Health Information Management At Abc Hospital Essay

I. Policy Statement ABC Hospital will safeguard the privacy and security of protected Health Information, otherwise known as â€Å"PHI†, in maintenance, retention, and eventual destruction disposal. Destruction and disposal will be supported in accordance with State and federal law, HIPAA, and as defined by the ABC Hospitals retention policy. The schedule for destruction and disposal shall be suspended for records involved in any open investigation, audit, or litigation. II. Purpose of Policy ABC Hospitals, Health Information Management is responsible for maintaining a medical record for each individual patient in inpatient and outpatient settings. These records are to be properly maintained and accessible to suitable individuals. After retention requirements have been met, the destruction of the health record will be carried out by the method that ensures there isn’t a possibility of reconstruction of contents of the health record. III. Procedure This policy shall apply to health information that is generated during provisional healthcare to patients in ABC hospital’s patient care units, patient care centers, practices, as well as participants in research studies. 1) Record Retention a) Record retention may take form of electronic health records, paper documents, microfilm, electronic data storage, etc., but shall be maintained so the information is available for clinical reference upon request.
